One of my sons is an economist. I always attribute a shared expression in my writing "I miss the good old days when crime was higher and real GDP was lower". My favorite reminder for folks when I wish to poke the bear. (1) 2M years walking upright (2) 4000 years worth of alphabets (3) 225 years worth of vaccines starting with smallpox. In the 20th century, despite eradication in the US in 1949 and the WHOLE WORLD by the mid 1970s, smallpox killed MORE PEOPLE than the Great Influenza, WW1 and WW2 combined.
